Photo AlbumThe 'Morning Walks' series continues... :)Mar 20, '08 11:04 AM
for everyone
Something that I very much look forward to... the morning walks :). And last weekend Chiam and I were at one of the many aboriginal villages here in Malaysia, the Aboriginal Chinggong Village in the state of Perak. Yet another unforgettable experience :)

An old lady carrying bamboos, on her way home from a nearby forest. These bamboos are later chopped to small pieces and sold as chinese prayer sticks. A bundle of 100 sticks can be sold for RM5.00 to RM4.50, which if you ask me is way too cheap for all the hard work !! But this is one of the ways for them to earn a living.
Photobucket

At a nearby river, a lady washing bamboo. I was hoping that she'd turned around... and she did !! :)
Photobucket

A father finding a spot on one of the rocks where he then placed his son on and bathe him. I thought this was such a beautiful sight.. love, care and devotion. The kid later was, while shivering, wailing as his father soaped him up. I guess the soap got into his eye.. :).
Photobucket

This was exactly one of the shots I was really hoping to capture... a woman washing clothes at the river and smashing clothes on a rock :).
Photobucket

A girl brushing her teeth. She had just finished washing the basins, pots and pans...
Photobucket

A very kind hearted and friendly man in front of his home making a birdcage. When I enquired about the village and told him that Chiam and I were there for photography, he suggested that we check out a nearby river. He further said that there'll be kids swimming and women washing clothes. I immediately got excited of course.. hehehe :). He then actually asked us to take 2 of his children [whose sweet adorable photos will be in my next album] in the car to show us where the river is !! Wow.. such hospitality !! I never thought I'd get such generous and warm welcome :)
Photobucket

An elderly man who seemed to have just gotten back from work. I did not enquire where he was from but from what I was informed one of the way to earn a living by the villager is rubber tapping. Perhaps he just finished his morning round.
Photobucket

His name his Aching. I was introduced to him by his sister-in-law, a sweet and very informative lady [the wife of the birdcage maker above] who offered to take us around the village [which we so happily accepted :)] and we eventually got to Aching's house. Aching is 19 years old and he has to use a wheelchair to move around. When he was 11 years old, he had a terrible fever and since then bit by bit he lost the ability to use his hands and legs like other people. I chatted a bit but he was too shy and only ocasionally smiled. I was further told that once in a while his brother will carry him to the river for a swim. I almost teared up right there. And most times while his cousin [who is staying with him] is out for work, the village kids will come around to help him with the daily chores. They'll cook and feed him, wash the dishes and fold the clothes. This just touches my heart. Then I got to know that the cousin will be getting married soon and will have to move away. This worries his sister-in-law.... and it worries me too... and I prayed for him...
Photobucket

Aching's very simple and very humble living room...

Thanks Phillip :). The wide lens is the permanent fixture to my camera actually.. hehe... :)
Yea, I missed it too. I guess this is the way to go about it when it comes to shots such as these, keeping them as true to the original as possible, with little editings :)

Thanks Timothy :). That was the intention, although there are so many other aspects of their life that I could not capture. I suppose I can't do much within the 4 hours or so there. We had to leave early cause it was quite a long drive back :).

Hi Ino.. welcome to my humble abode :)
Yeah, colours are always a big thing for me... one of my ways to 'pop' the subjects.. hehe.. :)

Hi Edison, thanks :)
Yes, I'm back. My 'non-normal colours' images is just a way to escape as I sometimes feels that my images had become so painfully similar with nothing new to offer. And thus variety became a huge thing for me, be it in terms of subjects to how I colour my images. It's a good diversion, one that feel more like an indulgence than anything else. It's a good way for me to 'branch out' :). But I understand your preference in staying true to the original form and I respect that :).

Yes, I don't think they mind at all. I was just across the river and at first I do get that curious looks from them. But after a while, and I guess after they saw me playing with and photographing the village kids, they felt a lot more comfortable with my presence :).

Hi huio.. thanks buddy for the kind words.
Actually, my outing has been far in between due to work demands mostly. Thus it is hard to ask my friends to join me as I myself find it hard to schedule. For instance, this particualr trip's tentative plans was only finally confirmed the night before.
'Memukau pemerhati'? Wow.. thanks bro :). You made my day la... :)

Thanks William :). And thanks too for appreciating the behind-the-pics stories. I just thought it'd be interesting to share and that the images deserve a little bit more information :)

Only after I posted the uncensored version did I realise it. I immediately took it off the album and replaced with a pixelated version.. hehe.. :)

Their kindness was totally unexpected. Not that I thought it'd be otherwise, it's just that my earlier visit to another aboriginal village about a month ago was not as pleasant. So there was that worry, just a little bit.

You know Esther, one of the kid named Cahaya [her photos will be in my next album] asked me as I was about to leave, 'Nanti abang datang sini lagi?' [Will you be coming back?]. As I looked down, I saw her hopeful face. I was taken aback by the question and fumbled in my reply. I had to tell her the truth and gentle and softly said, 'Tak sayang, abang tak dapat datang sini lagi' [No love, I will not be able to come here again'. The moment I said that, my heart just sank... more so when her cute cheery face turned sad.... I just felt really really bad...

I guess I must not let myself get too involved with my subjects when doing photography but then I think that is my strongest point because when I had establish that connection, it helps me capture an images that are not 'empty'...

Thanks Esther for the comments :)

Thanks Esther.
I feel things, sometimes much too much. And in Aching's case, I felt totally helpless. I tried saying comforting words, but I know mere words just won't cut it, you know. I think if I ever go there again I will look for Aching first and see how he's doing. Of course I'll find Cahaya and her brother Aidil too and ask how their schoolings are :). Cahaya is in pre-school now, while Aidil is in primary.

Hehe... I so totally understand :). And I missed capturing these kind of images.. been a long while since I last did it :). But I must admit it was partly due to lack of photoshooting outings.. hehe.. :)

Thanks Luzcel :)

There are just so many stories from my visit there Ed and I thought it'd be nice to share with you and everyone. Plus it helps 'explain' the photos too :). In addition, they'll be kind of like my mini journals, a reminder of my visit there... something I'd definitely enjoy reading and reminisce many years later :).
Much much thanks Ed for such an uplifting comments. I love getting to know the people I photograph and had always did them [the shooting and finding out about the people] with respect and sensitivity which I hope will translate to my images :).

Ivan, Ivan, Ivan.... buddy you just made my day la :). I was hoping or more accurately longing for my images to have 'soul' which after all these years doing photography seems to elude me.... except for perhaps a few earlier photos in earlier albums.... eh, even that is debatable... hehe...
Thanks you so much for noticing that little piece of a rather 'revealing' info about me.. hehe... :)
Still, I have a long way to go and comments like yours and others will encourage me to strive for better.
